Anxious About Joining the Gym

June 1, 2020

Rocking up to try out a gym for the first time and worried what will lie behind the doors? You know you want to make a change, but fear is holding you back? this is not an uncommon story and we hear time and time again. So, what are some strategies we can use to help ourselves over this anxiousness?

Well first of all, let’s make it be known that no matter what level you are at, from a beginner to and athlete going to something new and different, brings it some sort of anxiety on some level, so you’re not alone, we all feel it! But it doesn’t have to stop you from doing the things that you love to do, the things that you know will lead you towards a healthier you, the best version of yourself.

A sobering thought to bring us back to reality a though to help us be in the moment at hand can be remembering that our anxiety comes from thinking about things that have not happened yet. They are most likely things that will not even happen, and all that time spend thinking about what could happen is simply putting energy into something that is bringing us away from our goals. So be in the moment, don’t spend your time and energy worrying about the future, your thoughts and time are valuable, fill them with positivity that will bring you closer to achieving your goals.

Familiar with the quote ‘strength in numbers’? Well having the support of someone we know and trust, a friend with similar goals for example is a great way to help you through this initial stage. Why not get a friend involved? It will help you make that first step into the gym to have that consultation to check out the facility to help you get comfortable and feel settled in a new unfamiliar environment.

We all feel anxiety on some level, so next time you’re worried about taking that first step towards being healthier and creating the best version of yourself. Live in the present and draw on the comforting support of friends and family, you never know they may even end up thanking you for getting them involved in the gym too.
